Blackjack Basic Strategy, Explained
Basic strategy is the complete table of mathematically correct plays for every possible blackjack hand against every dealer upcard. Played perfectly, it cuts the house edge to roughly half a percent — before any counting at all.
What basic strategy actually is
For each combination of your hand and the dealer's upcard, one action — hit, stand, double, split, or surrender — has the highest expected value. Basic strategy is simply that list, computed exhaustively from the game's probabilities. There is no opinion in it: for a given rule set, the chart is a mathematical fact.
That last clause matters. The chart depends on the rules. Whether the dealer stands or hits on soft 17 (S17 / H17), whether you can double after splitting (DAS), whether surrender is offered, and whether the dealer takes a hole card (American vs. European/ENHC) each flip a handful of cells.
Hard totals — the backbone
A hard total is any hand without an ace counted as 11. The logic runs on one idea: the dealer's upcard determines how often the dealer busts.

The famous discomfort zone is 12–16 against a dealer 7 or higher: you hit even though you might bust, because standing loses more often in the long run. The chart doesn't promise you win the hand — it promises the least-losing choice.
Soft totals — the ace changes everything
A soft hand contains an ace counted as 11, so you cannot bust by taking one card. That freedom makes aggressive doubling correct:
- Soft 13–14 (A2, A3): double vs. 5–6, otherwise hit.
- Soft 15–16 (A4, A5): double vs. 4–6, otherwise hit.
- Soft 17 (A6): double vs. 3–6, otherwise hit — never stand.
- Soft 18 (A7): the trickiest cell — double vs. 3–6, stand vs. 2, 7, 8, hit vs. 9, 10, A.
- Soft 19+ : stand (under H17, double soft 19 vs. 6).
Standing on soft 17 is one of the most common and expensive habits in casual play — the hand can only improve or stay level, and 17 doesn't beat a made dealer hand.
Pairs — split to attack or to defend

Surrender — folding done right
Where late surrender is offered, giving up half the bet is correct in only a few spots — but they matter: hard 16 vs. 9, 10, A and hard 15 vs. 10 (plus 15 vs. A and 17 vs. A under H17). Refusing all surrenders "on principle" quietly leaks EV.
Rules change the chart. H17 flips 11 vs. A to double, adds soft-19 doubles, and adds surrenders vs. Ace. No-DAS removes several pair splits. ENHC (no hole card) makes 11 vs. 10 a hit, not a double. A chart trained on the wrong rules is silently wrong — practice with the rule set you'll actually face.
Learning it for real
Reading the chart takes ten minutes. Executing it at speed, under distraction, for hundreds of hands without leaks — that's the actual work. Two things accelerate it:
- Immediate feedback. Being corrected on the exact hand where you drifted, not at the end of a session.
- Targeted repetition. Your mistakes cluster (soft 18 and 12 vs. 3 are classics); drilling exactly those cells fixes the leak fastest.
Once strategy is automatic, the next layer is card counting — which modifies these plays at specific counts through index deviations.

FAQ
How much does basic strategy improve my odds?
Typical hunch-based play gives the house 2–4%. Perfect basic strategy brings a standard 6-deck S17 DAS game to roughly 0.4–0.6%. That's the single largest improvement available in the game — bigger than counting itself.
Is there one chart for all casinos?
No. S17 vs. H17, DAS, surrender availability, and hole-card rules each change specific cells. The differences are small in number but real in cost — always match the chart to the table rules.
Should I take insurance?
Under basic strategy, never — the side bet pays 2:1 on odds that are worse than 2:1. It only becomes correct when a card counter's true count reaches about +3 (see the Hi-Lo guide).
Why does the chart tell me to hit 16 vs. 10? It feels wrong.
